Transition from Universal Analytics to Google Analytics 4

Public

As you may be aware, Google is ending support for its Universal Analytics product on 1 July 2023 and requires all customers to transition their Universal Analytics properties to Google Analytics 4 (GA4) by that date. For more information refer to the Google article, Universal Analytics is going away.

PageUp hosted Applicant Portal and Job Listing sites

Impact

This change directly affects customers who are currently using Google Universal Analytics to track traffic on PageUp hosted Applicant Portal and Job Listing sites.

Note: In response to the change outlined below, you will likely need to engage your Digital Marketing or IT teams, who manage your Google Analytics accounts.

To ensure a seamless transition and continued tracking of your PageUp hosted pages into Google Analytics, you will need to generate your own GA4 code(s) through your Google Analytics account and share them with PageUp to update the relevant configuration.

If you take no action, after 1 July 2023, you will no longer be able to track traffic analytics for your Apply Portal and Careers site in Google Analytics.

Migration Process

To facilitate a smooth transition to GA4, please follow the steps outlined below.

Part 1: Generate your new GA4 code in the Google Analytics Dashboard

  1. Access the GA4 Setup Assistant: By logging in to your Google Analytics account and accessing the "Admin" section, you can start the migration process. Please ensure you have the necessary Editor role access for your account (you may need to speak to the team within your organisation that manages your Google Analytics).
  2. Select the Desired Account: In the Account column, ensure that your desired account is selected. If you have only one Google Analytics account, it should already be selected.
  3. Choose the Universal Analytics Property: In the Property column, select the Universal Analytics property that currently collects data for your website.
  4. Access the GA4 Setup Assistant: In the Property column, click on "GA4 Setup Assistant," which is the first option available.
  5. Start the GA4 Property Creation: Click on "Get started" under the option "I want to create a new Google Analytics 4 property."
  6. Choose the Tagging Option: Based on how your website is currently tagged, you'll be presented with a few options.
  7. Create and continue: Select this option if you want to proceed to the "Set up a Google tag" page (step 7).
  8. On the "Set up a Google tag" page: choose the "Install manually" option. Make sure to take note of the new GA4 measurement ID, such as G-BNZ2C4CBRZ, and click "Confirm."

Part 2: Provide your new Google Analytics codes to PageUp

  1. Contact PageUp by raising a ticket with our Support Team
    1. Advise of the relevant new Google Analytics code(s) which start with a ‘G-’.
    2. If you currently use different codes for your Apply Portal and Careers Site tracking, please ensure you provide both codes.
    3. PageUp will update the settings on your behalf and confirm once this has been actioned.

Should you encounter any difficulties during the migration process or have any questions, please refer to the Google Analytics Help Center documentation or reach out to our Support Team for assistance.

Recruitment Marketing

To support our customers in this transition, we are making changes to how Google Analytics tags are configured in the Recruitment Marketing system.

Previously it was possible for a customer to configure both Google Tag Manager and Universal Analytics within the same theme. However, effective from 15 May 2023, customers will only be able to configure either:

  • A Google Tag Manager, which can include their relevant Google Analytics 4 (GA4) property, or
  • A Google Analytics 4 (GA4) property.

Depending on your current configuration, action may be required prior to 15 May 2023 to ensure traffic to your career website continues to be tracked correctly by Google.

The specific action required will be dependent on your current configuration.

Scenario 1 - Universal Analytics only

If you currently have only Universal Analytics enabled within your career site theme:

  • Follow instructions from Google to convert your Universal Analytics property to Google Analytics 4 (GA4).
  • With Organisation > Themes, locate the appropriate theme. Navigate to the Third Party Analytics tab, and enter your Google Analytics 4 (GA4) ID in the field labelled “Google Tag Manager Tracking Code or Google Analytics UA code”. Finally, click Save.
  • Your career website traffic will now be recorded by Google against your Google Analytics 4 (GA4) property.
  • Check your new Google Analytics 4 (GA4) property to ensure traffic is being recorded as expected.

Scenario 2 - Universal Analytics and Google Tag Manager

If you currently have both Universal Analytics and Google Tag Manager configured within a single theme:

  • Follow instructions from Google to convert your Universal Analytics property to Google Analytics 4 (GA4).
  • Follow instructions from Google to add your new Google Analytics 4 (GA4) property to your Google Tag Manager account.
  • With Organisation > Themes, locate the appropriate theme. Navigate to the Third Party Analytics tab, and:
    • Ensure that your Google Tag Manager ID is entered into the field labelled “Google Tag Manager Tracking Code or Google Analytics UA code”.
    • Remove the ID for your old Universal Analytics property from the field labelled “Google Analytics Tracking Code / ID”.
    • Finally, click Save.
  • Your career website traffic will now be recorded by Google against your Google Analytics 4 (GA4) property via your Google Tag Manager account.
  • Check your new Google Analytics 4 (GA4) property to ensure traffic is being recorded as expected.

Scenario 3 - Google Tag Manager only

If you currently have only Google Tag Manager enabled within your career site theme:

  • No specific action is required within Recruitment Marketing.
  • However, you may need to follow instructions from Google to update to Google Analytics 4 (GA4) any Universal Analytics properties which are managed via your Google Tag Manager account.

Regardless of your scenario, please ensure that all necessary actions are completed by 15 May 2023. From this date, support for Universal Analytics codes will be removed from the Recruitment Marketing system.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the Support team via the usual channels, or speak directly to your Customer Success Manager.
